WaterHawks Day 5

The 5th and final clinic day at the Waterhawks ski site.  Today we had 10 barefooters!  Five in the morning session and a completely different crew of five in the afternoon.  It was sweet! Checkout our morning footers!

Morning Barefoot Clinic Crew

Coy Roussell started us off for the day! First set Coy learned a front toe hold on the WBC shoe skis and by next set it was very close to getting it on his barefeet!  We started the process of going backwards and doing the back deep water start.  As many of you know there are TONS of steps to learning the back deep and in one set Coy was starting to come up! Awesome dude!

Ready for a front deepy?

Working the Front Toe Hold!

Coming Up on the Backdeep

Want to meet a fast learner! Mitch Tauke learned to barefoot incrediable fast!  In just 2 sets he learned his front deepwater on the boom, then shortline and then on to the 10ft extention.  Keep it up Mitch and before you know it long line will be a breeze!

Controlled!Three Point Stance-MitchAnd he's even giving us a thumbs up!

Ryan Ruhns already knew how to barefoot, but wasn’t getting up consistently.  Today we worked on a smooth transition from the deepwater to three point and then to standing up!  Ryan also learned to do a front one foot on the shoe skis.

After a nice smooth stand up!- RyanStrongman Front Toehold!

Jackson Twait hit the water for the very first time today!  Jackson learned a deepwater start on the boom.  Oh but thats is not all is also to let his feet glide across the water and did both front one foots! It’s rare but it happens and Jackson is better footing on just one foot than two! Great job!

Jackson on his barefeet!Working barefoot Form- JacksonOh yeah! One Foot!

David Lammers had attempted barefooting a few times in the past, today with a little bit of instruction he got is feet gliding!  From the barefoot swing to the deepwater start.  Checkout his great three point! Looking forward to seeing some video!

Thank you all for coming out and spending the morning with us, we hope to ski with you all again soon!  Remember if you are in Florida give us a call and come ski with us.  If you’re looking for a new barefoot suit, checkout KSO Wetsuits.  Designed and worn by Barefoot World Champions Keith St. Onge and David Small.  Ski ya next time!

Barefooting in Backwater

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

We met Carlos Barreto on Facebook and once he found out about us doing the tour he was interested in doing a clinic.  Carlos joined the Backwater Gamblers Show Ski Team this spring.  Their site sits on the Rock River in Moline, IL other wise known as the Quad cities.  Carlos is a very animated man and you can see his enthusiasm when he talks about barefoot water skiing.

Barefooting Crew!

The first morning was sweet and Carlos Barreto started it off.  Pure glass water the length of the river.  He did his tumble turns and a few one foots.  I then put him on WBC shoe skis and we worked one foot one hands in preparation for toe holds.

Emily Buckwalter is a nineteen year old that skis on the Gamblers.  Her goal was to learn how to barefoot for the first time.  Well, she said she did it before but we made her do a deep water start, which may be a little more difficult at first but it is a stepping stone for the five foot.  She accomplished a deep start on shoe skis and later achieved her goal on standing on her feet.  Great job Emily!

Emily on ShoesEmily on her BARE FEET!

Jason Kauzlarich supplied the boat and he had been foot’n for many years.  In the afternoon the wind blew up so hard we had to go to the backwaters of the Mississippi.  Before going there Jason learned tumble turns for the first time and they were flawless.

Tumble Turn!

That afternoon we headed out to the Mississippi, which was a treat for Lauren and I.  We got the full tour and was able to see the casinos in the backwaters of the Mississippi and Arsenal Island where they make armored doors for tanks and humvees.  We were only able to find a small strip of somewhat smooth water so we did what we could.

Pat Baret got up backwards for the first time on shoes skis.  Oh, did I mention he got the boat driver completely soaked!  Haha  It was funny seeing everyone scurry for shelter when the down pour came!  Seeing people get wet in the boat is funny because they have nowhere to go!  Including the driver…ME!

We got a little damp this run!

Much Better!

James Melter came out strong from the beginning.  He is a fantastic skier with perfect form!  He went through all his basics and once he proved to me he could do what was necessary to turn he executed a perfect back to front and front to back on his feet.  We continued working his reverse turns.  His ultimate goal is to do all four turns consistently although he has done them all before.  We pounded his reverse turn and figured out a few things that would make all the difference.

Surface Turns- James

CJ Barreto, Carlos’s son came out to try barefoot water skiing for the first time.  He never wanted to go out with his father, which might have been a blessing.  Sometimes son’s have a difficult time taking instruction from their father.  I was one of them and for me it was tough because while I was trying to have fun my father was telling me what to do.  My dad told me what to do all the time, “Take out the garbage, make our bed, clean your room, etc…”  I did not want to take instruction from my father when having fun on the water.  So dad’s…be careful and try to butt out of your son’s business at the right time and place.  I went over all the steps with CJ before we took to the water.  With the help of the HeadZone helmet I was able to guide him to barefooting on his feet for the first time.  Congrats CJ!!!!

Cj barefooting!

Jason’s brother Jake  Kauzlarich came out and he has the same story as CJ.  Never footed before! We were able to get him on the five-foot extension after one set on the boom.  Hats off to you brother!

Yay! Sweet Jake!

The only guy we know that Smiles while falling!

Last but not least was my buddy Matthew Becker.  He is the social butterfly on the Backwater Gamblers ski team and is always smiling!  He came out to have a little fun with the boys and was able to do a deep-water start on shoe skis and on his feet off the extension.

Oh Yeah!

Thank you to the Backwater Gamblers for allowing us to stay at you ski site!  A big thanks to Carlos for organizing this whole thing! Keep skiing!

It was HOT!  What better to do in the afternoon than to give the RV a little scrub down.  Just before we left Spencer, Mass we put in a little bit of elbow grease into the tour bus.

Barefooting Across America Tour Stop #2

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Anytime Fitness National Barefoot Tour Stop #2 is complete! Yet again another wonderful clinic a great set up by Don Simon in Harriman, TN. Footers from all over the United States came to ski at this barefoot clinic.

Ski partners Pete Whitcomb and Chris Ritchie show up for a day on the Emry River and walk away with many new techniques!  Enough information for them to “Chew On” for the rest of the summer.  Our friend Danny Richardson used that tag line at least 30 times per day and I even began to say it over and over!  It’s funny how some people can rub off on you after hanging out for several days in a row.  Pete brought his converse shoes because he was having a hard time standing up. I was confident that he would not need them so we kept those on shore.  I explained a few things to him, got him directly on the boom and he instantly had success!  He then went to the five foot and got up without a problem.  His goal was to stand up behind the boat for the first time on his feet and I made sure we took our time before getting there.  Of course, he had instant success on his first try.  We had to give most of the credit to HeadZone Helmets for the great communication they provide!  Congrats Pete!

All the way from McCordsville, IN Paul Miller. Energetic to say the least, Paul found us on Facebook and noticed we were going to be in Tennessee.  Since he is in sales and TN was part of his territory he decided to take a business trip…wink, wink!  Paul was full of positive energy and successfully completed both toeholds on shoe skis behind the boat.  He also did a toehold on his feet off the five-foot extension.  He also cleaned up his backwards stance at 30mph, which is always a big challenge!

Chris, on-air Personality of the Year – medium market otherwise known as “Chris & Andy” on Country Radio station WVIK-FM came out for the day.  He worked on his one foots and got up backwards six plus times on the shoe skis for the second time ever!  If it is someone’s first few times getting up I tell them to simply get miles under their feet or shoes.  The more miles you can put on the more you can work on positioning and confidence.
Don Simon a young mature man of 73 is still like a kid on the water, he simply loves it. Over the years Don has been doing all that the can to grow the sport of barefoot waterskiing. All that are involved have a great appreciation for Don and his works. Anyone in Tennessee that wants to learn or just ski with some good people, let us know and we will put you in contact with Don.

Here is an article about Don and his knee surgery:  Don Simon, Extreme Sport Enthusiast

A local ski partner of Don Simon’s is young footer Todd Fipps. Todd was intoduced to the sport of barefooting and he is 100% focused on succeeding in 3-event barefooting. Todd is quickly working his way up the ranks. Keep an eye out for this up and comer.

Our most enthusiastic student was Danny Richards from Kernsersville, North Carolina. If you live in the area please let us know, Danny is looking for some barefooters to ski with, he is willing to teach. Danny has a love for the sport like no other, his excitement overflows and makes everyone laugh and feel encouraged. Listening closely to every detail paid off, look what Danny has been working on this week.

The man that has a love/hate relationship with shoe skis :) — Drew Stutphen from Almin, Ohio.  Drew had an uneasy feeling about using shoe skis the first morning, and absolutely did not want anything to do with reverse foot. Keith knew what Drew needed to work on to become a better skier– and reluctantly, Drew followed instruction. By the afternoon set, Drew came to an understanding with what Keith was teaching him and when he was done, he had already ordered a pair of WBC shoe skis from the WorldBarefootCenter. We wish Drew the best this summer and look forward to seeing his progress.

Dr. Jim Murakami also from Amlin, Ohio made the trip down to barefoot with Keith St. Onge.  Jim had great questions and learned tons while at the clinic. Jim and Drew are ski partners and they have plenty to work on this summer. This early in the season clinic will give their skiing a boost for the summer.

The Barefooting Across AmericaTour Begins

Monday, May 16th, 2011

The tour begins!  5/15

Keith St. Onge and Lauren Lindeman are off!  First stop Port St. Lucie, FL at the PGA tourney.  A great start to the tour Keith St. Onge tricked a potential world record of 13,100!  This is the first time 13,000 points has been reached in history. Woo hoo! After the tournament we loaded up the RV and headed north to Valdosta, Georgia.  The Cargile family was welcoming and allowed us set up on their property for the night. It was peaceful and a beautiful area full of lakes and open land.

Hitting the road early this time in search for a church.   Our navigation system brought up a church within one mile down HWY 75 so we pulled off.  We met a nice young woman and we asked her what time the service was., “Sunday school starts in two minutes.” She said.  Ummm, “What about the service?” We questioned.  Isn’t Sunday school for teenagers and younger?  She replied, “No, this is Sunday school for grown ups.”  We told her we had never been to a Sunday school for grown ups but we were willing to give it a try!  The church was in Lenox, GA and we had a great time and learned a lot from the deacon (Chad) that put on the Sunday school.

We would like to thank Chad for sending us this email and keeping us in their prayers for safe travels.  Thank you so much for welcoming us into your church. Here is what we received from the Church we visited:

“Keith & Lauren,

Hey ! I just wanted to let you guys know how much we enjoyed your stopping by for Sunday School today at Lenox Baptist Church ! It was a pleasure meeting you both and please stop by on your way back through. I pray for safe travels and good luck with everything you all have going on with your barefootin clinics!

In Christ,

Chad Sumner
Lenox Baptist Church”

The billboards along the way are entertaining feet follow us everywhere! Traveling from Valdosta to Atlanta we are hoping to meet up with some friends in Atlanta.  Followed by grocery shopping at Whole Foods in Marrietta, GA in search of Coconut Bliss and other healthy products!

It has been a blessing having my fiancé Lauren with me.  She drives the bus when I get tired and fuels me up with food when need be.  It has been interesting watching her drive this beast though!  A 34ft. motor home keeps you working the whole time while driving.  If it’s windy you feel it, when a trucker passes you it pushes you over and when you drive by a larger vehicle you feel the wind off it and you once again feel the wheel challenge you.  We are approaching Atlanta right now and I can tell Lauren is getting much more relaxed driving the Anytime Fitness Tour bus…phewwwww…I can relax a bit, but must take over the helm in the big cities.
