Johnathan Martines: My Experience at the 2012 Barefoot Nationals

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

The 2012 Barefoot Nationals at the Barefoot Ski Ranch in Waco, Texas were my 5th Nationals.   Up until 2012, I have never won an Overall title and I had only gotten a handful of medals.

Going into the tournament I was very confident in my skiing. Just weeks earlier I had qualified to ski in the open division in all three events.   All of the training and tournaments leading up to the Nationals went great.  I scored a number of PB’s and learned many new tricks.

The first event I skied in the tournament was tricks.   I was the top seed going into the event and I felt very confident with my trick run.  During my run, I got cut on a few tricks but still scored at 3100, enough to put me into second place and put me into the Open Men’s Final Round.   In the trick finals, the water was extremely rough and everyone was scoring very low.  I scored a 1600 putting me in 2nd place with a Silver Medal.
In jump we only got 1 round of 2 jumps because the water was rough and they needed to finish all of the jumping in one morning.   I missed my first jump, but scored a 16.1 on my second jump, enough to get me the silver medal.
Slalom was by far my worst event.   I barely stood up my first run.  I then proceeded to take a head packer early on in my second run, earning a 9.5.   I did not make the finals, but I did score just enough to stay in it for the overall.  The rest of the skiers that were chasing the Overall also had trouble in the slalom finals, giving me the overall.  When I found out I won the Overall, I was so excited. Winning my first National Overall title is a memory I will never forget.

A Barefoot Proposal

Sunday, April 14th, 2013

I went to Texas for two very important reasons, one was to ski in the 2012 Barefoot Waterski World Championships. It was held at Stuart Parson’s amazing site, the Barefoot Ski Ranch.  (Thank you for having all of us, Stuart!)

The other was to propose to my girlfriend, Tracy. She told me months earlier that no one has ever been able to surprise her, because she always finds out. So I was on a mission to get it done without her finding out. I was going to do it at the banquet. This was a challenging task for me, being someone who has a tough time speaking in large crowds. (Okay, let’s get real; I don’t talk that much ever.) This is something that I really wanted to do, in front of my ski family. The first thing that I needed to do was to give the ring to someone so Tracy didn’t happen to see it. (Thanks Kami for holding onto it for me. I really needed my support team– thanks to the Koehler and Derry Family.)

Needing some encouragement, I downed a Rum and Coke. Kenny and I went and spoke with Dale to see what part of the night that we could fit the proposal in. With the Koehler family behind me, Dale walked up and handed me the microphone.  Tracy thought that I was just giving a speech. I was halfway through the proposal before she figured out what I was doing.

All of a sudden, she turned red and said “You’re not doing this now are you?” After I finished with the proposal, she very softly said yes and not into the microphone. The crowd then started to ask, “What did she say, what did she say?”

She said yes!

RV’ing Our Way to the Barefoot Nationals

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

The Jones family took to the road from the Midwest to Waco, Texas to experience our first Barefoot Nationals!  After a summer filled with training and dedication to the sport, my dream of skiing at nationals was finally within my reach.  It was not without a great amount of preparation to make this happen.

The five of us plus our dog, “Malibu”, headed out on a sweltering August day on our first RV trip– heading to the even hotter Texas.  We were hyped to spend a week engrossed in our favorite pastime: “barefooting”.    And we were not disappointed!  We traveled 14 hours to and from our destination.  We slept overnight in Wal-Mart parking lots (thanks to a tip from Keith St. Onge).

We ate together, played together, and experienced the scenery together.  The people were nice, the Barefoot Ski Ranch was fabulous, and the entire family had the experience of a lifetime.  The outcome was beyond my expectations both on and off the water!  For this year, the distance is greater, the expectations are higher, and I am excited for the CHALLENGE!

Let the fun begin!

2012 World Barefoot Water Ski Championships

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

This years World Championships was held 2 weeks after the US Barefoot National championships at the same site provided by Stuart Parsons at the Barefoot Ski Ranch in Waco, Texas.  A big thanks goes out to Stuart for putting both of these events on.  We all know that its a big job so we salute you :)

Areal view of BSR

If any of you reading this has ever been to BSR then you will know that it is probably one of the best water ski set ups in the World and it is very rare for the site to get blown out…. Throughout the week of Worlds we had the pleasure of a huge storm come around Florida and make its way towards Texas.  Fortunately it didn’t get quite over to us however it did bring wind to the site and there were a few occasions where both of the ski sites had white caps.  This made it interesting to say the least.

Opening ceremonies

The opening ceremonies were at BSRs new cable park and it was great to see so many different countries there especially Mexico and China which are new at the World Championships.  We were also shown a true texan show and got to see a shoot off……. interesting to say the least

2012 Medalists

Right after the opening ceremonies Worlds got under way. There were a lot of good skiing and having the live feed on the World Barefoot Centers website made it possible for fans, families and groupies (haha) to watch the skiing take place, real time.  All we need now is instant scoring ….. 😉
